I especially found the part about:

"And if you go to the Supreme Court and lose, you will actually set back the cause of equality in marriage for years. So, my question is, why did you go against the wishes of so many in the gay community who didn't want you to do this?

TED OLSON: Well, and there are several answers to that. In the first place, someone was going to challenge Proposition 8 in California. Some lawyer, representing two people, was going to bring this challenge. We felt that if a challenge was going to be brought, it should be brought with a well-financed, capable effort, by people who knew what they were doing in the courts.

Secondly, when people said, "Maybe you should be waiting. Maybe you should wait until there's more popular support." Our answer to that was, "Well, when is that going to happen? How long do you want people to wait? How long do you want people to be deprived of their constitutional rights in California?"

to answer some of my own questions. I wasn't sure if the timing of this was best strategically, but at the same time I agree that we don't want to just procrastinate either. They seemed well prepared and their answers leave me confident in their abilities. So now I just hope the judiciaries are level headed, open minded, fair, and ethical.u3q2vhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15845017823913752380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-587902609826926070.post-17925214294795739712010-03-01T21:12:52.745-08:002010-03-01T21:12:52.745-08:00Watching the segment makes me very hopeful for the...Watching the segment makes me very hopeful for the ultimate outcome of the case, although it is yet to be seen if that will have an impact outside of CA or not.aNorthWestViewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03598507140332496283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-587902609826926070.post-66931368825059459182010-03-01T20:02:08.452-08:002010-03-01T20:02:08.452-08:00Brian/Jay,

Not me!).

Every time I hear these men speak or read their arguments I'm left thinking 'what judge could ever rule against them?' And I carry around the happy thought for about 5 minutes that there is so obviously a winning side on this debate, because, as Olsen said, there just isn't a single successful argument on the other side.

Then I remember that just because things are clearly apparent to me, it doesn't mean other people can see it, or we would have had equality years ago. And then I get worried, because if these arguments, these witnesses, these couples aren't successful, I don't know what will be.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-587902609826926070.post-40936759525657788822010-03-01T17:59:46.588-08:002010-03-01T17:59:46.588-08:00That last line was a Bette Davis quote, right? Well with ride exchanged for night...

I think it's time to push it, waiting in the back with hats in hand will never get you a seat at the counter. Do I think it will all blow up in our faces? No, I don't. Why? Because if they go by precedent and the courts are all about precedent, then there is no way they can deny LGBT their marriage rights. The Lovey case was the final nail in the coffin of marriage deniers. Because the courts have ruled on marriage before, and it was ruled to be a universal right guaranteed by our constitution.

Once again thank you for a great post! thank you!Biki Honkohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06731335682679434307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-587902609826926070.post-47257679901147670132010-03-01T17:01:59.243-08:002010-03-01T17:01:59.243-08:00Thanks for sharing this.
