Recently on one of his many appearances on "Meet The Press", Senator McCain decided to change the rules and conditions for a Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal...again. This time instead of deferring to military leadership or congress...his third attempt at game changing was the independent study he helped initiate to determine the possible effects of a repeal on combat readiness and troop moral. Well guess what?....Since the results of that study have been leaked, with the majority of responding soldiers stating they couldn't care less if gays serve openly in the military. Senator McCain's response?....I want another study. I think not Senator McCain.
Video of the Senators appearance on "Meet The Press" and my response after the fold
Sooooo....yeah....This study was supposed to be it...THE determining factor as to whether or not allowing gays to come out of the closet in a job they are already doing, would cause the universe to unravel and time and space to tear itself apart.
First, it was John "I will defer to military leadership" McCain...unless of course they did'nt agree with him(0:49):
Then, it was John "The military must defer to Congress" McCain...that lasted about as long as it took for President Obama to start feeling the heat for not doing anything about the policy that he promised to do away with. When it became clear that a legislative push was in the works to repeal DADT, guess who steps back into the picture?...John freakin "lets do a study" McCain. He is one of the architects of this awful and humiliating study. Now that its complete he wants to claim that its not the right study?.....BULLSH*T!
"...and once we get this study, We need to have hearings and we need to examine it and we need to look at whether its the kind of study that we wanted..."and lets finish that sentence with..."and anything else that will prevent a repeal from ever happening."
I'm sorry...but no. No more studies. This study was insulting enough. We asked Soldiers if they would be likely to leave the military if they knew a gay soldier was serving....yet they are already serving. We also asked Soldiers if they would act like utter bigots if they were asked to attend a formal military event in wish they knew an out soldier would be attending with a date....are you serious? Is having gay soldiers in the military that deeply frightening to these people? If that's so, how do they find the courage to face an enemy on the field of battle? We also asked these soldies spouses what they thought! These "studies" are ridiculous, invasive, discriminatory, and humiliating to the gay men and women who are already serving in the military and I will not buy for one second longer that they have some larger practical purpose...I am done.
To me its the unasked questions that speak the loudest here....Why not ask, "Would you be afraid to serve alongside another person of a different race or religion from you?" No one bats and eyelash that Black men and women serve in the military now...and that was seen as tearing the fabric of the military asunder in the day it was first proposed. How about, "Would you be distracted by the presence of a woman serving in a combat role?" No one questions why there are women in combat roles on the front lines...when I can remember a time in my lifetime when that was unthinkable because the men would not be able to concentrate on their job and the women were to in danger of being raped by enemy troops(they really said that, no joke). Yet...gays and lesbians are being asked to submit to survey after survey and the possibility of segregated facilities like showers and changing rooms because some soldiers don't know how to follow their training and act professionally?...its a great steaming pile of utter bovine excrement and its time that we stopped pretending it is anything else.
Maybe he should simply be referred to as Darth McCain...
What John McCain and others like him should do, is simply come out and say, " I don't like you. I don't accept you. And I will not allow you to receive fair and equal treatment as long as I draw breath."
That's what he really means. He will offer any excuse...filibuster until his vocal cords bleed...all to ensure that the gay men and women currently serving in the closet, cannot do so in the open. This isn't even an issue of keeping gays out...its only about preserving the delicate perceptions of those who don't want to acknowledge that we are already there. All because of their paranoid fantasy of being peeked at in the shower. How pathetic and infantile. If that's ever going to happen, it would be happening right now...by any of the men serving next to you who you don't know are gay because they cant say. So you should be afraid...very afraid!..we've already seen what your packin'...get over it already.
Its time to be done with this pathetic charade. It serves no purpose other than to pretend to say "wait" when what you really mean is "no"...its time that we wake up to that fact and refuse to accept the excuses any longer.
Until next time dear readers...
It's hard to know which is more disturbing: an unprincipled turncoat Repug like McCain or a cowardly turncoat Democrap like Obama.
ReplyDeleteAlright with the wicked Senator from the west on the prowl I'll be Dorothy, but I'm not wearing the dress. :P
ReplyDeleteSomewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?
Dream your dreams and fight to make them come true!

What is wrong with people? Honestly, they need to get over themselves and just understand there are valid viewpoints that may run counter to theirs. That doesn't make the other viewpoints wrong based on the fact they are different. Just because McCain has issues with gay service members, doesn't mean that every service person does. Either move with the times, or move over and let society continue to evolve.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, as usual!
It is TIME for the Democratic Party - YES, under the leadership of President Obama (Nancy Pelosi?)
ReplyDeleteto GET a backbone (and a SET of BALLS!) AND TELL our country (and their fellow congressmen "across the aisle") exactly WHAT is happening in Washington. The Republicans have made IT CLEAR - their number one goal is to prevent the re-election of Obama - THEY have said it REPEATEDLY stated this BOTH before and after this last mid-term election. All disguised under job growth, tax cuts, whatever - but THE message is CLEAR. It is time for the Democratic Leadership to CALL them to TASK - PUT the ISSUES on the table - UP for a VOTE for all the world to see - and LET the results fall where they may. WHO will be to blame if our country continues to decline? Instead of the “conciliatory speech” President Obama gave following the election, (which NO republican – and many of the turncoat Democrats did NOT even show our nation’s leader to LISTEN to his words - I had hoped to see one of "WELL, it IS TIME to get to work!" You are either FOR the American people or NOT - to those new Republicans joining us - LET your actions SPEAK for themselves! STOP gridlock on party lines – do what is RIGHT and GOOD for our country - all of our citizens - Republican, Democrats and all the others out there.” IF you are coming to Washington to continue the gridlock - to stop GOVERNMENT - then let's see you ACTUALLY follow through on your threat to "filibuster” – then MAKE THEM DO IT!
No one remembers THAT it HAS happened – the longest? - Strom Thurmond Aug. 29, 1957, a full 24-hour filibuster speech to an empty congressional chamber against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Let the US citizens SEE the Republicans hold CONGRESS hostage with BY acting on WHAT they promise – a filibuster – MAKE them DO IT. Endless speeches for HOURS and DAYS – to delay a vote on what is RIGHT and GOOD for their own constituents and show the public will see you for WHO you really ARE!
(Actually I wanted Obama to come out the day after the last mid-term election and tell the TWO highest ranked and powerful Republican Members of congress Mitch McConnell and John Boehner (who ALREADY attacked him declaring THEY were NOT willing to WORK in a bipartisan manner UNLESS OBAMA bowed to THEIR wishes and accepted THEIR declarations as the NEW laws for the land of our country) to KISS HIS BIG BLACK ASS!)
It's great revisiting your blog, Bryan. It's been awhile for me. Not surprised to see that you are still consistently offering up insightful commentary for your readers. Kudos to you!
