Hating On Couples...The Couples Strike Back

Valentines day is fast approaching! Are you ready?!  Do you have  cards?! Flowers?! Chocolates?! Erotic massage oils?! Come to think of it....do I have any of that stuff?! The answer is yes, no,...and maybe. Additionally for parents is finding someone to watch the kids so you can have the uber rare thing known as a "date night"....an event that comes along with the same frequency as Haley's comet. but no matter what your relationship status everyone looks ahead to Valentines day with excitement or dread...sometimes both. As a happily married dad of fifteen years Valentines Day is a different experience for my husband and I than it will be for many others. For starters, Jay loves the candy, the flowers, the movie, and all the sentiment that comes with the Holiday. I, on the other hand, am grateful for a night out and a little monkey business after. Sometimes all we actually get is a couple hours together in the morning before we both have to rush off to separate responsibilities.

Since my last few posts have been on the serious side, I thought I would have a little fun with this one and share a post that made me and my husband laugh...."Why Everyone Hates Couples" written by Orlando Soria, attempts to explain why he thinks that everyone hates couples and finds the answer if the annoying little things we only do when we are in a relationship. Now...most single people hate on couples around Valentines day and that is ok.....but Soria being a coupled person himself, makes me wonder why the shade? Some of the things he gives of evidence of obnoxiousness I would find appalling under any circumstances and still others I may be guilty of myself but I never really saw as all that annoying.  But I'll try not to be too defensive and let Mr. Soria speak for himself...

Its only words...

When you hear the terms "No homo" and "That's so gay", whats your emotional response? If your of a certain age, these terms are relatively new and maybe they don't resonate with you so much. At least, not to the same degree as words like fag or queer can. Words have such a curious power to illicit an emotional response from us but they only carry the meaning that we give them...or do they?

This weekend my husband Jay made a video about what he perceives to be homophobic actions on the part of a huge YouTube channel, The ShayCarls. Among the points brought up in that video were their use of the "terms "no homo" and "that's gay". Now...it is not my intention to make this post about the video or the ShayCarls. What I want to address were how many people vehemently defended their use of "no homo" and "that's gay". I was absolutely blown away by the amount of people...gay people even...who said they could care less about it....even from a guy who says he didn't want his kid to "turn out gay".

I do not like the phrase "that's gay"...at all. However, I was on the fence about "no homo" because it just sounds so stupid and makes the speaker look like an idiot. For that reason I tend to ignore stuff like this because it just showcases that persons lack of understanding about others. That is until Jay brought up some very good points that have forced me to reevaluate these seemingly casual words....

Going Where No Man Has Gone Before....Except "Teh Gays" That is

Captains Log:

Stardate: 29something-or-other

Space...the final frontier..these are the voyages of the starship Enterprise....it's five year mission...to explore, strange new worlds...to seek out, new life and new civilizations...to boldly go where no man has gone.....wait a minute!...

Kirk: Is that a trail of glitter on  the view screen? How did that get out in space?

Chekov: It appears to be the warp signature of an alien wessel captain.

Kirk: Uhura!...have we been hailed?

Uhura: I havent recieved anything captain...but all communication with starfleet has been cut off...all I can get is loud dance music.

Kirk: Spock...who redecorated the bridge? The lighting is incredible!...and when did we start serving mojito's?

Spock: I did not authorize any such improvements captain....It is highly illogical.

Kirk: ...and did our uniforms get tighter? I didn't think that was possible. My butt looks incredible but I can barely breath in this thing.....Spock!...Bones! whats going on?!

Mccoy: Dammit Jim!...I'm a doctor, not a fashion designer!

Spock: It is uncertain captain. It appears that we have been visted by a previously unknown alien culture.

Kirk: ....Mr. Sulu....What are you smirking at?....

Sulu:... Don't ask. Don't tell captain.
