Star Wars Geek Breaking News!...More Movies?!!

alright...I'm hijacking the blog today to diverge from my usual policy of writing on gay related topics to veer sharply into my favorite place...a galaxy far far away. On my usual blog trolling this morning I stopped by theforce.net as they are my go to guys for all news star wars related. This morning they put up a post that really should have included a class one hot beverage alert as I almost sprayed hot coffee all over the screen when I read it. So please put down your beverage and read on...

IESB.net, a movie rumor sight reports that a trustworthy source that George Lucas may be planning another trilogy of Star Wars films....

*shock!*....*sprayed coffee*..!!!!

After I recovered, I was all like...

Could it be true?...after all, the odds that George would make more any more movies in the Star Wars universe were approximately 3,720 to 1!...He swore that the prequels would be the last movies he would make in the franchise, preferring instead to move more towards television and to let new imaginations take his story and run with it.

My first reaction was disbelief...Internet rumors are usually not even worth much and rarely amount to anything. So how reliable is this rumor? In the opening line of Theforce.net post they claim that IESB stands by their "inside" source 100%. IESB themselves claim a history of successful "scoops"...

From Joss Whedon directing the Avengers, to the recent announcement of Disney's planned renegotiation of the Paramount Marvel deal, to the countless casting scoops, directing scoops, to our solid sources at Lucasfilm.

Confirmed IESB scoops specific to the Star Wars universe include the first announcement of the PG-13 rating of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the first word of a live action Star Wars TV series as well as the Clone Wars animated series. Yes, all of these Lucasfilm scoops were all first reported here on IESB.
The site also makes a good point that the last time Lucas surprised us with another set of movies was when he was remastering the first three. Being that Lucasfilm is hard at work converting the current six movies into 3D format for a 2012 re-release of Episode 1...it is plausible that George has gotten the itch to return to the Star Wars galaxy and expand the existing story. Still it's a long time down the road to see any new films...

IESB has been told fans can expect the new trilogy after the entire saga is released in 3D which is expected to be complete around 2015 or 2016....

...The ideal plan, according to our spy at Skywalker Ranch, is to be able to release a new Star Wars film within 24 months after the release of the last re-re-release (is that right?) of Return of the Jedi 3D.
All of this in addition to the many live-action and animated television series that they have already committed significant resources to. Now, I have no ability to fact check their claims, but it's quite exciting if it turns out to be true. So exciting in fact that I will squeal like a little girl on Christmas morning....for real. Lets hope it's not a trap.

Not that this is our first time at the rodeo. When the prequels were announced, they were anticipated with unabashed glee on the part of a generation of kids that grew up on the original movies. Once the prequels were released their was alot of mixed feelings about where George took the story and how they were made. The extensive use of CGI...midichlorians...Jar Jar...

It was difficult to reconcile what we had grown up with, to what we got. Being a stark raving fanatic of all thing Star Wars it took me a while to accept them as a part of the story that I knew an loved. It just wasn't how I pictured it would be....with a three more possibly movies on the way I can't help but speculate how they fill fit in the saga as it is currently.

Either way...This could be big news for Star Wars fans and cause to celebrate!

Until next time dear readers...

  1. Ok, I have to admit this right here right now. The original Star Wars trilogy was great.

The prequel not so much. The best was the last where you get to see the crappy actor playing a young Darth Vader suffer and burn.

Lets hope the next batch aren't as crappy.

  2. Well, way back around the dawn of time, Lucus claimed it was going to be a trilogy of trilogies, with the first three released being the middle trilogy.

30 minutes of whiny Anakin and disgusting, racist, stereotype Jar Jar being tortured would be better than another trilogy, imo.

  3. Cool! I loved the original three the best. The prequels were ok but they told their story. Thanks for the news.

  5. I'm wondering what part of the story George Lucs is going to do. If he's intending to get Hamill, Fisher and Ford back to play their original roles, I can't see it being anything earlier than the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, and if it's that then the first scene of the first film will probably be Chewbacca dying! :-(

  6. To quote Admiral Akbar "It's a trap!". I hope he will make a new trilogy, but I doubt we'll be happy with what he makes. I did love Revenge of the Sith, so maybe it will be OK.

  7. I like Star Wars, don't get me wrong, I do. But they always struck me as somewhat internally inconsistant. Not to mention that they aren't very creative mythologically, historically, or culturally. They do have an interesting thing going with the Force, and that has Eastern philosphy BIG TIME. I must say that I'm a Tolkienian fanboy, but I'm not opposed to Star Wars. I just wonder what they'd be like if Tolkien did them. lolz
